WHAT IS A
TISSUE BANK?
A tissue bank procures, processes and preserves donated tissues for transplantation.
WHAT ARE THE KINDS OF
TISSUES BANKED?
Living donors can donate bone removed during knee and hip replacement surgery. This bone
would otherwise be discarded as bio-medical waste.
In certain situations the long bones
from an amputated limb can be
donated.
Amnion obtained during deliveries
can also be banked and used as a
biological dressing.
Deceased donors can donate a
variety of tissues such as bone,
cartilage, tendons, heart valves,
blood vessels, skin and nerves.
HOW ARE BONE GRAFTS USED?
Bone grafting helps repair bones after a severe fracture. It is used when bone fusion does
not occur, or when healing is delayed or occurs incorrectly. Other reasons for a bone graft
include reconstruction in congenital anomalies, and following trauma and ablative surgery for
cancer. They are also used in conditions like avascular necrosis and osteomyelitis, and in
joint replacement surgery and spinal fusions that reinforce the back.
WHAT IS DENTAL BONE GRAFT?
A dental bone graft replaces missing or lost bone in the jaw bones. Dentists commonly place
bone grafts prior to dental implant surgery or when bone loss negatively affects oral health.
WHAT CONDITIONS ARE MANAGED WITH A DENTAL BONE GRAFT?
Dental bone grafting can:
- Fill in an empty tooth socket after an extraction.
- Repair damaged bone resulting from dental trauma or infection.
- Rebuild the jaw before getting dentures.
- Stabilize and support loose teeth.
- Provide a strong foundation for dental implants.
- Lift maxillary sinuses, a procedure sometimes necessary before dental implants.
